EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
