A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in national projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
